广告有广义和狭义之分,它们具有不同的特点,其定义的特性范围也是不一样的.
广义广告的主要特点是,广告的内容和对象都比较广泛,包括营利性广告和非营利性广告.经济广告是为了推销商品和劳务,获取利益,属盈利性广告;非经济广告则是为了达到某种宣传目的,属非盈利性广告.非盈利性广告的例子很多,如西方国家的竞选广告,属政治宣传广告,中央电视台的“广而告之”节目属于道德教育广告,而我国古代设置烽火台,当国家受到外来入侵时,在烽火台上燃起狼烟,以召唤各方诸侯前来支援,属于军事广告.
狭义广告是指盈利性广告,或称经济广告或商业广告,如报刊、电台和电视台的广告节目,以及招贴、幻灯、橱窗布置和商品陈列等.狭义广告的定义为:“广告是广告主以付费的方式,通过公共媒介对其商品或劳务进行宣传,借以向消费者有计划地传递信息,影响人们对所广告的商品或劳务的态度,进而诱发其行动而使广告主得到利益的活动.”这样的盈利性广告的定义,说明了如下问题:
(1)广告是一种有计划有目的的活动;
(2)广告活动的主体是广告主,而广告活动的对象是广大消费者;
(3)广告活动是通过大众传播媒介来进行的,而不是面对面的传播,如推销员的推销;
(4)广告活动的内容是经过有计划地选择的商品或劳务信息;
(5)广告活动的目的,是为了促进商品或劳务的销售,并使广告主从中获取利益.
