This brings to mind the famous case of Dodge v.Ford in 1919 in which a Michigan court ordered Henry Ford to pay a dividend out of the Ford Motor Company to his minority shareholders,including the Dodge Brothers.This came after Mr.Ford stated that he was holding down his profit-making ability for charitable purposes and to provide the benefits of automobiles and industrial production to America.The court held that Mr.Ford's actions were contrary to the for-profit purpose of the corporation.
Since that time,courts have allowed companies to be involved in charitable and other nonprofit-making activities.These activities have always been countenanced in the context of increasing for-profit business.
